Max Hilsamer is a filmmaker and media artist. He studied Fine Arts and Experimental Film at the University of the Arts Berlin and Parsons, The New School, New York. His work has been shown at film festivals including DOK Leipzig, Festival Max Ophüls Preis, Vienna Shorts, and FILE São Paulo.

Working in hybrid forms between documentary and experimental film, his practice combines site-specific observations, personal narratives, and the materiality of the archive. His portraits of places approach space as assemblage or porous geographies that offer multiple points of entry and interpretation. For him, film and time based media are tools to hold on to the provisional and temporary connections that emerge within such spatial constellations.

His recent practice at GBB focuses on places that, as configurations of living beings and historical objects, form complex nature-cultures. These ephemeral formations are often situated precisely at the fault lines of what we commonly understand as “the environment.” They are threatened by climate change, are a result of it, or point to the fact that we have long left the terrain of normality.

In addition to his own artistic practice, Max also works as a cinematographer on narrative short films, documentaries, and music videos.
