For most of her adult life, film artist Lynne Sachs has collected and saved the small business cards that people have given her in all the various places she has traveled – from professional conferences to doctors’ appointments, from film festivals to hardware stores, from art galleries to human rights centers. In these places, Sachs met and engaged with hundreds of people over a period of four decades, and now she is wondering how these people’s lives might have affected hers or, in turn, how she might have touched the trajectory of their own journey. During her lecture, Sachs will expand upon her personal approach to making experimental documentaries and her essayistic method of asking questions of herself and others. She will interweave clips from her previous works (including The Washing Society, Film About a Father Who, and Girl is Presence) and her work-in-process, all of which take a hybrid approach to research and production. She will also touch on the writing of thinkers who have recently been of great importance to her own art-making practice, including theorist of visual culture and contemporary art Tina Campt and scholar and activist Silvia Federici. In this way, Lynne will examine her own current work, be it inchoate, porous and, like everything that is worth doing, deeply challenging.
Since the 1980s, Lynne Sachs has created cinematic works that defy genre through the use of hybrid forms and collaboration, incorporating elements of the essay film, collage, performance, documentary and poetry. Her films explore the intricate relationship between personal observations and broader historical experiences. With each project, Lynne investigates the implicit connection between the body, the camera, and the materiality of film itself. Lynne discovered her love of filmmaking while living in San Francisco. During this time, she produced her early, experimental works on celluloid which took a feminist approach to the creation of images and writing — a commitment which has grounded her work ever since. From essay films to hybrid docs to diaristic shorts, Sachs has produced 40 films as well as numerous projects for web, installation, and performance. She has tackled topics near and far, often addressing the challenge of translation — from one language to another or from spoken work to image. These tensions were investigated most explicitly between 1994 and 2006, when Lynne produced five essay films that took her to sites affected by international war – where she looked at the space between a community’s collective memory and her own subjective perceptions. Over her career, Sachs has been awarded support from the Guggenheim Foundation, the NYFA, and Jerome Foundation. Her films have screened at the Museum of Modern Art, Wexner Center, the Walker the Getty, New York Film Festival, and Sundance. In 2021, Edison Film Festival and Prismatic Ground Film Festival at Maysles Documentary Center awarded Lynne for her body of work. Lynne is also deeply engaged with poetry. In 2019, Tender Buttons Press published her first book Year by Year Poems. In 2020 and 2021, Lynne taught film and poetry workshops at Beyond Baroque, Flowchart Foundation, San Francisco Public Library, and Hunter College, City University of New York. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Roee Rosen (geboren 1963) ist ein israelisch-amerikanischer Künstler, Filmemacher und Schriftsteller. Rosen ist Professor am Ha’Midrasha Art College und an der Bezalel Art Academy in Israel.
Rosens aus Malerei und Text bestehende Installation Live and Die as Eva Braun (1995-1997) löste einen Skandal aus, als sie erstmals im Israel Museum ausgestellt wurde. Später wurde ihre Herangehensweise an die Darstellung des Holocaust als bahnbrechend anerkannt und in Berlin, New York, London, Warschau und 2017 in Athen als Teil der documenta14 ausgestellt.
Rosen widmete sich mehrere Jahre seiner fiktiven weiblichen Persona, der jüdischen belgischen Malerin und Pornografin Justine Frank. Ein Projekt, das die Fabrikation ihres gesamten Oeuvres sowie eines Buches und eines Kurzfilms, Two Women and a Man (2005), beinhaltete.
Dem filmischen Schaffen Rosens wurden mehrere große Programme gewidmet, unter anderem am Tate Modern, London (2010), im Museum für Moderne Kunst, Wien (2014), bei den Internationalen Kurzfilmtagen Oberhausen (2012) sowie umfassende Retrospektiven beim Filmfestival La Roche-sur-yon (2013) und beim FICUNAM Festival, Mexico City (2018). Überblicksausstellungen des Künstlers fanden bisher u.a. im Zamek Królewski in Warschau (2010), im Tel Aviv Museum (2016), im Edith-Ruß-Haus für Medienkunst, Oldenburg (2016), in Charlottenborg, Kopenhagen (2019) und im Project Arts Centre, Dublin (2019) statt. 2018 fand im Centre Pompidou in Paris eine umfangreiche Einzelausstellung mit dem Titel Histoires dans le pénombre statt.
Rosen arbeitet derzeit an einem abendfüllenden Film mit dem Titel Kafka For Kids . Sein jüngster Kurzfilm Explaining the Law to Kwame , der 2020 auf dem FIDMarseille Premiere feierte und mit dem FNAC sowie dem Flash Award ausgezeichnet wurde, ist Teil dieses Projekts.

Eli Cortiñas, 1979 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ES) geboren, ist eine Spanische Videokünstlerin kubanischer Abstammung.
Sie war Gastdozentin an der Kunsthochschule Kassel (DE) und der der Kunsthochschule Mainz (DE) sowie Gastdozentin an der HGB Leipzig (DE) und an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe (DE). Derzeit teilt sie sich eine Professur mit der Südafrikanischen Künstlerin Candice Breitz an der HBK Braunschweig (DE).
Sie erhielt zahlreiche Stipendien und Residencies, unter anderem das Fundación Botín Stipendium, Berliner Senat Film/ Videostipendium, Villa Sträuli Residenz, Kunstfonds Arbeitsstipendium, Goethe Institut artist in residency, Kölnischer Kunstverein Atelierstipendium, Rupert Residency, Villa Massimo und das Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Stipendium. Sie war in zahlreichen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen vertreten an Institutionen wie Kunsthalle Budapest, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Museum Ludwig, MUSAC, Museum Marta Herford, Centre Georges Pompidou, Pinakothek der Moderne, Wilhelm-Hack- Museum, Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, KINDL Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst, Museum Morsbroich, Berlinische Galerie. Ihre Film- und Videoarbeiten wurden bei der Riga Biennale, Moscow International Biennale for Young Art, Mardin Biennale, Internationales Filmfestival Oberhausen, Prospectif Cinema im Centre Georges Pompidou, Torino Filmfestival, Curtas Vila Do Conde, Les Rencontres Internationales, Videonale 14, Videonale 18, Nashville Filmfestival, Transmediale 2021/22 und Internationales Fimfestival Gijón präsentiert. Eli Cortiñas lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

Workshop "Computer Vision" mit Coralie Vogelaar

In this workshop we will try to view the world of the image in a new way. We will be focussing on alienating ourselves from our usual perception and try to see through the eyes of the machine. We will investigate and collectively map out emotional responses to technology and their behavioural implications and will try different intuitive research methods that promote the production of associative and subconscious ideas but also reflect on them. As a cooperation between the Graduate School for Moving Image and the Communication School of Graduate Academy, Amsterdam-based artist Coralie Vogelaar will conduct a workshop that invites participants from both scientific and artistic backgrounds to discuss different notions of research. Collectively they will exchange on the field of „computer vision" using a variety of open source tools to examine image recognition, emotion tracking and others.
About The Communication School:
The Communication School is a summer school open to Kassel university students (MA, doc, post-doc). In times of Fake News and raising mistrust towards science, Science Communication has become essential and an inherent part of scientific practice. About the lecturer:
Coralie Vogelaar is an Amsterdam-based visual artist. In her ongoing research, she explores the areas where technology and humans meet, the interaction between the two and ways in which they influence each other. Her work consist of systematically conducted studies how computers see humans and their activity, and works with deep learning, eye & emotion tracking, and image recognition software. Both her background and interest are interdisciplinary, and she works together with (data)scientists, creative coders, actors, dancers and choreographers. Recent exhibitions were in ZKM - Karlsruhe, Veem House for Performance, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Kunstverein Kassel, Science gallery Dublin, Impakt Festival Utrecht, UnArt Museum Shanghai, Noorderlicht Festival, Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, MU Artspace, V2 - lab for the unstable media, FOMU - Antwerp, SPRING Festival Utrecht and Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen. She currently is doing a residency at TU Eindhoven Innovation Lab
